Mental Health Week: How to break the taboo

Approaching mental health systematically: A Mental Health Week is a structured WHP component that breaks the taboo—and builds a bridge to the risk assessment of psychological stress.

Why does a set occasion lower the inhibition threshold?

Talking about stress is difficult as long as it is seen as an individual problem. A themed week shifts this to the collective: suddenly everyone is talking about it, because "it's the week for it." This shared occasion removes the stigma and makes the first step much easier for individuals.

What makes a week effective?

A proven mix is a combination of low-threshold and in-depth elements: short daily impulses that don't overwhelm anyone, an open—ideally anonymous—opportunity to talk with professionals, and a component specifically aimed at managers. Because attitude starts at the top: when supervisors take the topic seriously, teams feel empowered to do so as well.

When is the right time, and what comes next?

Around World Mental Health Day in October, the format has the greatest resonance. It is important not to think of the week as a flash in the pan: it is the visible kick-off, which should be followed by ongoing, quieter offerings—from a mindfulness minute to clear points of contact. This way, an event becomes a cultural change. Such offerings strengthen individuals. Where the stress arises within the company itself, only the risk assessment of psychological stress reveals it—in Germany, it is mandatory for every employer.

How to put it in place

  1. 1
Schedule a fixed theme week and set a focus topic for each day (e.g. stress, sleep, breaks, boundaries, finding help)
  2. 2
Choose a format for each day: short talk, tip on the intranet, mini exercise or guest contribution
  3. 3
Put together resources: internal contacts, EAP/counselling offers, reliable external points of contact
  4. 4
Set the tone: break the taboo rather than lecture – treat mental health as a normal topic
  5. 5
Open the week visibly: a short announcement from management on why the topic matters
  6. 6
Make the week's programme transparent (an overview of what comes when)
  7. 7
Start with low barriers: on the first day, a light, positive topic (e.g. good breaks)
  8. 8
ONE input every day – short and easy to take in, no overload
  9. 9
Stress that it is voluntary: offers rather than a compulsory programme
  10. 10
Repeat the ways to get help visibly: where do I get confidential support?
  11. 11
Involve managers so that the topic is supported from the top
  12. 12
Collect short anonymous feedback: what was helpful, what was missing?
  13. 13
Roughly assess the use of the offers and resources
  14. 14
Derive something lasting from the one-off action: which topic deserves ongoing attention?
