Micro-surveys in WHP: Honest feedback in 60 seconds
Many WHP managers know the problem: you have implemented a measure, but you don't really know what the staff thinks about it. The classic annual survey with 80 questions comes far too rarely and far too late to help steer everyday operations. Micro-surveys – three to five questions that can be answered in under 60 seconds – deliver exactly that.
Why do short surveys provide more honest answers than long ones?
The longer a survey is, the more likely people are to drop out or not respond at all. There is also the fatigue effect – those who are still answering after question 15 often just click through blindly. The result: lots of data, little signal.
Another factor is anonymity. If a survey is short, anonymous, and accessible without a login – for example, via QR code at the printer or as a link in an internal message – the barrier to participation drops significantly. Employees provide more honest feedback when they are sure that it cannot be traced back to them. No email address, no department assignment, no metadata from a required account.
Data protection is mandatory under the GDPR – and at the same time a signal of trust: those who communicate transparently that no personal data is collected receive more and more open answers.
Which WHP questions really matter?
Not every question is equally valuable. Two formats have proven particularly effective in workplace practice.
The **Net Health Score** works like the Net Promoter Score, but for one's own perception of health: "How healthy do you currently feel in your everyday work – on a scale from 0 to 10?" A single number, collected monthly, often shows trends faster than a detailed survey. Where the score drops, it is worth taking a closer look.
The **Stress Barometer** specifically asks about the three main stressors: workload, leadership behavior, and social support within the team. These three dimensions are at the core of psychological stress at the workplace and are scales of the internationally used COPSOQ questionnaire. An in-house short survey is therefore not validated itself, but can be oriented towards these scales. Short surveys based on these dimensions deliver actionable results instead of a general mood picture.
Important: Always repeat questions in the same wording. Only then are time series comparable and trends recognizable.
How do results flow directly into measures?
The most common failure of micro-surveys is not in the collection, but afterwards: data is collected but not communicated. If you ask, you must also respond – otherwise participation will decrease next time.
The simplest rule: share a brief update within two weeks after the survey ends. Not every number needs to be explained, but the staff should see that the feedback has been read and evaluated. "You told us that the workload was high in March – we discussed this with the team leaders and agreed on the following:" – this is the format that builds trust.
If the results flow directly into the WHP dashboard and are linked there with other key figures, an early warning system develops over time. Departments with persistently low Net Health Score, rising Stress Barometer, or declining satisfaction with measures become visible – before absenteeism increases. How you can set up a survey in compliance with data protection and use the results is shown in the guide Employee surveys for WHP.
How to put it in place
- 1Choose a template: Net Health Score or the COPSOQ short form (3–5 questions) – don't invent your own questions
- 2Configure the survey as anonymous: no email, no login, no mandatory fields beyond the core answers
- 3Set up access: QR code for posting + link for digital channels (intranet, chat, email)
- 4Launch the survey and keep it open for 2 weeks – send a reminder after one week via the same channel
- 5Analyze the results in the dashboard and give the workforce brief feedback within two weeks
