Stand-Up Meetings: The Shortest Meeting Is a Standing One

Setting-based prevention without extra effort: Standing meetings systematically reduce sitting time and can be anchored as a WHP measure in the area of physical activity.

Why are discussions better when standing?

When you stand, you get to the point faster. Without the comfort of a chair, no one gets distracted, monologues are less frequent, and decisions are made earlier. This is no coincidence: standing signals to your mind that something important is happening and will continue shortly. Short, regular check-ins benefit the most from this.

What do standing meetings have to do with health?

Every meeting held while standing is one less sitting phase. With several short meetings a day, this adds up noticeably—without anyone having to "exercise." This very invisibility is its strength: the measure does not require a change in thinking about health, it simply changes the format.

How does it catch on by itself?

It's best to start with formats that are already short—the daily stand-up, the quick check-in. A high table or simply a room without chairs is enough. As soon as participants notice that they finish on time, the format spreads on its own. Of course, long, content-heavy meetings remain seated—it's about the many short ones in between. A good addition is the Best Practice Walk & Talk: The meeting on the move.

How to put it in place

  1. 1
Identify a suitable meeting: a daily or weekly status meeting (max. 15 min. agenda)
  2. 2
Choose a place: standing in the office area, not a meeting room with chairs
  3. 3
Optional: flipchart or whiteboard as an aid
  4. 4
Not suitable for: feedback conversations, conflict conversations, presentations with a laptop
  5. 5
Announce it to the team: “Our daily stand-up will take place standing from now on.”
  6. 6
Communicate the rule clearly: 15 minutes at most – everyone briefly says: (1) What did I do yesterday? (2) What am I doing today? (3) Are there any blockers?
  7. 7
No chairs, no laptop (or only 1 shared screen)
  8. 8
Show up on time and standing yourself – you set the tone
  9. 9
Set a timer: 15 minutes – if not finished, postpone topics and clarify them one-to-one
  10. 10
Moderation: go round the group, everyone 2 minutes at most
  11. 11
Stop discussions: “Let's clarify that one-to-one afterwards.” – the standing meeting is not a discussion forum
  12. 12
In case of lateness: start without those who arrive late
  13. 13
Collect feedback: do meetings feel more efficient?
  14. 14
Compare the average meeting length before/after
  15. 15
Decide: extend the format to other meetings?
