Basic first-aider training is mandatory. What happens afterward is often forgetting. The refresher picks up where the original training left off – with what has changed since then, and with the hands-on component that makes the difference in a real emergency.
What does the refresher obligation require?
In Germany, workplace first aiders generally have to be retrained every two years (DGUV Regulation 1, Section 26(3)); the DGUV provides a first-aid training of 9 teaching units for this. Without repetition, knowledge fades quickly – especially for chest compressions, where technique and rhythm are decisive. A refresher with a manikin, a defibrillator, and current guidelines reactivates this competence far more effectively than a repeat lecture. The fear of acting decreases, and the likelihood of actually stepping in increases. Which occupational safety duties apply at which company size – first aiders included – is shown in the guide Duties by company size (German law).
What sets a good refresher apart from a formal box-ticking exercise?
The difference lies in the share of hands-on practice. Anyone who spends 80% of the time listening and 20% practicing forgets again quickly. Anyone who instead works hands-on with the manikin and defibrillator, with only the key updates explained concisely, retains what matters. The goal isn't a new certificate but confidence to act.
How to put it in place
- 1Clarify with the responsible statutory accident insurance (Berufsgenossenschaft) how the refresher is funded and request the quota of subsidised places.
- 2Book a certified course provider and set in-house dates so that the refresher takes place at the company instead of externally.
- 3Draw up the participant list and check whose last training was more than two years ago – schedule these people first.
- 4Send the invitation with a choice of dates and frame the refresher as a health event rather than an annoying obligation.
- 5Collect registrations and ask managers to firmly guarantee their teams time off for the course slot.
- 6Prepare the training room with practice materials, drinks and catering so that the day is pleasant.
- 7Have practical scenarios from your own company built in, such as an emergency at a machine or in the office.
- 8Document attendance and collect the updated first-aider certificates for the personnel file.
- 9Compare the attendance rate with the target list and follow up with latecomers for a replacement date.
- 10Collect short feedback on the trainer and practical relevance in order to assess the provider for next year.
- 11Check the current number of first aiders against the statutory minimum ratio and update the notice in the workplace.
